At least thirteen individuals killed and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.
A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an accelerated speed, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen two non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."
In response, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
