The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
