Our Leading Album of 2025: The Artist's Lux Takes the Top Spot.

At first glance, this album could seem closer to a difficult academic challenge rather than a new pop album from a musician who just had a last hit was a collaboration with an international K-pop icon. Divided into 4 different movements and performed in 13 tongues, this is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced work exploring feminine mystique, spiritual transcendence, and corporal transformation, often via the lens of different female saints. The dissolution of a relationship—a topic treated with raw honesty elsewhere—soars upwards on this record, carried by the lush sound of a full orchestra and contributions from an award-winning composer among a long list of collaborators. The pure ambition alone makes the efforts of other artists look quite small.

Transcending Scholarly Exercise

That this album manages to avoid dry intellectual posturing feels nearly miraculous, and complete praise belonging to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time project to fuse the past and modern styles, its ambitions feel much greater here, with the balancing act far more precarious. The element that really raises her fourth album, beyond its multilayered melodies, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core sense of playfulness. Much like the legendary artist during her height, there is a wondrous quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you into its whirlwind. Even when she's tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to be right there for the ride.

A Prime Example of Joy

This exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during the stunning piano-led ballad inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four minutes. Then, all the music falls silent, to reveal there's a gleeful giggle followed by a comment prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge crashes down with comedic force. The track immediately shifts into the wild single featuring racing orchestration, a powerful choir, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The magic of this album lies in the listener rarely quite know—nor wish to predict—what it is going to next."

Almost every song concludes at a totally distinct place from how it started. A track examines the fleeting nature of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating into electronic chaos. Elsewhere, a song that recalls the artist's previous trap-infused work begins off dark and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, before fluttering flamenco rhythms and an angelic chorus arrive to smooth its rough edges.

The Bridge Of Experiment & Pop

Another crucial balancing act of the album involves navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is little coincidence that it has achieved the artist's first work to crack the upper reaches of key markets: at its core a collection of truly undeniable pop songs. A song sung primarily in the English language builds around a chorus that seems to gather increasingly nagging melodies while it spins skyward. This trick gets repeated by a different powerful ballad that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies as a complex weave.

  • A waltz-like number seduces via its jaunty, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns with pop culture honesty of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a painted-on edge, like a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Banquet for the Ears

This album is popular music on a maximalist level, an ambitious grasp for high Art amid of impending artificial sameness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of sublime elevation, crafting an over-the-top spectacle that skillfully manages its own inherent excess. This is a deep well of hidden treasure that requires time to fully explore but never feels like a chore. Where some big pop albums of 2025 felt like a meager meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast at which the guests at it, perhaps tipsy on holy drink, flit from conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of soul-shattering grief, and common gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a contemporary theatrical production from music's most endlessly creative practitioner.
